As An Entrepreneur
(Type 4)
(product design, 3D printing, laser cutting, hand painted)
Content: Design Like An Entrepenuer. Within this project, we were prompted to create a 3 part design system that consisted of a typographic driven approach. For my system of items I chose to gather my inspiration from Alexander Girard. My system of three objects is meant to be used as a centerpiece of a dining room table. The four different coasters give off different personalities similar to the chairs of the restaurant La Fonda Del Sol allowing each person to pick one based on how their currently feeling. The next piece being salt and pepper shakers, that are inspired by Girard and his wife's folk art doll collection. And lastly the tray these two items are sitting on. The options for this tray are endless, it can be used to serve appetizers or bread for the dinner guests. This system captures the social nature surrounding the dinner scene of the mid-century modern era while incorporating glyphs as patterning and the personification of inanimate objects.
Process: Our class began by conducting designer research presentations on different typography driven designers. In which I gathered the inspiration for my object system. The process of this project involved a lot of prototyping, including: color choice, material choice and the overall scale of these objects. I originally was going to create clay salt & pepper shakers, but last minute decided to switch to 3D printed material because of crafting issues with the clay.
Takeaways: This project was by far one of my favorite within my time at CCS. Within this project, I was given the opportunity to learn two new pieces of equipment in which I hadn’t known before, the laser cutter, and the 3D printer. I also was able to design with inspiration from one of my favorite designers Alexandeer Girard. At the end of this class, each person was given a gift of one of the items from each student’s system within the class.
